We are very proud that staff here at Rosemary Lane have achieved Archimedes Training and Beach Schools Practical Skills and Environmental Management Award. This allows staff to work with small groups of children at local beaches throughout the school year developing first experiences within their extended environment.
Children have the opportunity to extend their knowledge, understanding and learning in the natural environment.
Accredited staff transport children by mini bus to the beach, safety is paramount and the adult/child ratio is low enough to enable staff to work and supervise children appropriately. During these visits a wide range of fantastic, stimulating activities take place which enrich children’s learning. Initially children are given time to explore the surrounding environment, priority is given to group discussions regarding boundaries, dangers and safety which are paramount to learning safely.
Staff carefully observe how children are learning through their individual interests and will scaffold and plan for their future development, stretching and stimulating curiosity.
Parents and Carers are encouraged to participate and join in with this wonderful experience. This is very beneficial to all involved and builds strong, meaningful links with families. Parents have given feedback to staff about the benefits that their children have gained through these wonderful experiences within the Beach Schools Project and the impact it has had on themselves and their children.
All activities are risk assessed prior to visiting the beach, these activities include exploration and collecting, camp building, rock pooling, fire building, also following the spontaneous interests of all the children.
All those who take part in the project thrive in the natural environment, moving freely, building and developing skills, having the time to revisit and taking safe risks. Children notice and comment on “change” , extending their knowledge of the environment.
Physicality and overall movement development is evident, the beach offers the children a relaxed environment which is stimulating and beneficial for overall well being .
Each child is unique and as such benefit in very different ways, these may include physical development , different forms of creative expression and imagination, furthering their knowledge, understanding and care of the local environment. It allows everyone to have the freedom to just be…
Over the six week programme the independence of the children to dress themselves with waterproofs and wellington boots improves and they become less reliant on the help of adults.
The small group size allows children to build close relationships with each other and as they share circle time they each reflect on their experiences at the beach. Children develop a sense of staying safe. Each trip inspires awe and wonder amongst the group.
